How to join NEMSA
NEMSA Changing The Image of EMS Professionals

The Public Image of EMS Begins With Us!

"This is a period of transition for the medical professions and for the public and private employers who offer emergency medical services. There is no blueprint for how our profession should develop and where it should go, but it is clear that this transition can never be successful without the input of EMS workers and the fullest respect for and sensitivity to our rights and needs. "   - North American EMS Employee Organization Network

Why is it that EMS Professionals seem to be held in lower respect than police or fire fighters in the public image?  Is the media and public perception of EMS still linked to the un-disciplined "ambulance drivers" of the past?  Why are EMS providers generally viewed as firefighter "helpers" and not recognized as the heroes they truly are?

NEMSA sees this strange disparity and has created public relations programs to combat the mistaken perception that EMS Providers are not special, important, or an integral part of the community.  It starts with community service in our local bargaining units.  Our members become part of the communities they work, serve, and live in.  Community members begin to recognize that EMS providers are important parts of their communities and worthy of the respect and trust of the citizens.

NEMSA also attends public meetings, Board of County Supervisors meetings, city council meetings etc... to help keep the image of professionalism amongst EMS providers fresh in decision makers minds.  NEMSA has successfully influenced county and city contract decisions towards private employers and away from fire departments in part because we point out the professionalism of our members.

  • When Olympus Camera put out a television commercial that portrayed EMTs stealing a camera from a patient, NEMSA stood against the portrayal of EMS Providers as thieves and successfully petitioned Olympus to pull the ad.  Olympus's PR Department pulled the ad stating they "regretted their error"
