How to join NEMSA
Private EMS Professionals and Labor Unions
The world of private EMS employment is divided in two:  Union and Non-Union.  Both have major impacts on EVERY EMS Provider.

Unionized EMS Providers generally find themselves to be parts of larger “umbrella” unions that may represent pipefitters, cheesemakers, auto-mechanics, government clerks, office employees, and others.   Examples include the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT or Teamsters), National Association Of Government Employees (NAGE), etc…  These unions claim they have strength in their large numbers.  However, seldom have these unions delivered results for EMS workers.

So called other EMS unions like International Association of EMTs and Paramedics (IAEP) are just branches of these larger “umbrella unions” such as Service Employees International Union (SEIU) or the Teamsters.  Members get a great sounding union name but no change in behavior and no better results.

Having so many members in so many diversified fields means each member group gets less and less attention.  In contract negotiations, less and less attention is paid to the details and nuances of the contract.  Less research, less preparation, and virtually no understanding of EMS are the hallmarks of these unions.

The results are obvious.  Union members left to themselves with sub-par contracts and very little ever changes while these “umbrella” unions extract every cent they can in union dues from each member to fund their bloated infrastructure and give donations to politicians who do not address EMS related issues.  EMS workers voices are so small within these large one-size-fits all unions that little to no progress is made and EMS workers are left to suffer.  Wages remain low, benefits unaffordable, and nobody has any hope.

Non-union private employers also drive down wages by paying even less to EMS workers than their union counterparts.  These EMS workers are lucky to make any amount above minimum wage and are generally under the tight watch of greedy employers who make extra profit off the backs of these hardworking employees.  These employers despise unions because they have the best of all worlds, higher profit plus lower paid employees equals high turnover.  High turnover means nobody will unionize because nobody can afford to stay employed there long enough to try.

Whether non-union or in an ineffective "umbrella" union, EMS Professionals suffer.  Wages, Benefits, Working Conditions, Professional Recognition and Treatment all suffer because everybody gets a piece of the pie... except for EMS Professionals...  NEMSA is changing that...
